Manchester Unemployed met with Police batons and fire hoses

ImageAfter Government cuts forced the number of unemployed to more than 2 million, protests took place all over Britain.  In Manchester protesters marched peacefully from Ardwick Green towards the City Centre where they were brutally dispersed by Police using batons and fire hoses at this corner of Fairfield Street and London Road. On the 7th October 1931.

On the 30th November I wanted to paint picket lines outside the courts, but I couldn’t find any, so after wandering around Manchester following remnants of the march I chose to paint here and came across a little red plaque I didn’t know was there.  Strange how history repeats itself.
